I was first acquainted with Amy Winehouse several years ago, on the excellent BBC 2, Later with Jools Holland. The shy and waif like Winehouse performed a stunning, smoky jazz number, and I was hooked.

A while later she released the beautiful album Frank. A wonderful eclectic collection of songs, that remains amongst my favourites.

The long awaited follow up, Back to Black is more accessible and more commercial than Frank, but the songs remain as personal and the performances are equally as good. It is to me, Motown for the twenty first century.

But something happened along the way with Amy and suddenly the shy young thing has turned into the stuff that the press dream of. With husband Blake Fielder-Civil, Amy has hogged this years entertainment pages for all the wrong reasons. Drug, drink and self harm problems have been emblazoned across front pages of newspapers across the globe.

Last night in Birmingham, Winehouse was booed for ranting on about her husband, stumbling around stage, forgetting song lyrics and dropping the microphone during her performance. Her reaction to the audience was to suggest that they must be mugs for buying ticket, and then threatening that “to all those booing, just wait ’til my husband gets out of incarceration. And I mean that!.” Also referring to the paying public as “c***s”.

Do us a favour Amy, ditch him while he is inside and find yourself someone less of a bad influence. Like maybe that nice Pete Doherty boy.
