The new Weezer promotional music video for Pork & Beans has received almost 3 million hits in 3 days on YouTube, alone!

The director who came up with Weezer’s music video concept is Mathew Cullen of Motion Theory.  The video celebrates creative expression and the popular culture of YouTube.

It was shot in Los Angeles at a studio and location in North Hollywood between 7-10 May, which also shows another amazing thing about the Internet.  Within three weeks a video can be shot on location, edited and uploaded to the Internet; and within three weeks a new video and song can be promoted to over 3 million people is simply amazing!

Many artists and record labels are now embracing the Internet and using its full potential as a promotional medium by giving viewers new videos and mp3’s without the concern of lost revenue that had plagued the music industry, hitherto.

How things have changed since the 1990’s when I set up the first UK Internet only music magazine (Freebase.com) and was in discussions with EMI, Universal, Warner and others on how to tackle Internet music piracy and make mp3’s available as paid downloads only.

Since Radiohead’s download initiative for In Rainbows last year, allowing the receiver to download the album for free or make a donation of their choice, it seems artists and labels of all sizes and popularity are now using the Internet to promote and sell their music in a very positive way.
