Start /Stop is the brilliant debut album from Union Sound Set due for release on Monday 25th October. The album includes the current single, Hiding Places which for me is the stand out track on a very accomplished debut album.
London based Union Sound Set comprise of ex-members of Prego. Edd Simpson, Caspar Williamson and Simon Britcliffe along with guitarist Dan Best and drummer Alex Walker have created something pretty special that lurks between the intensity of Elbow and the anthemic pop rock of Coldplay. Thrown in for good measure is a healthy spoonful of early Bloc Party indie rock; and to a lesser degree the likes of Bands Of Horses and The National.
Start/Stop is produced by Guy Massey who has previously worked with the likes of Spiritualized and the Manic Street Preachers.
The album has a familiar sound and theme running throughout its 11 songs. Intense but accessible. At their best Union Sound Set build songs from quieter beginnings into anthemic pop songs with big choruses and gritty punch. Their sound is destined to feel stadiums rather than small pub gigs like the Barfly in Camden where they played a Single Launch Party last month.
Hiding Places is an obvious single; the sound is made slightly brighter and cleaner with its uplifting chorus, giving it a commercial edge. While The Longest Calm errs towards rock with a harder, faster beat. Union Sound Set’s music is big, towering, powerful, dark yet light and is destined to go big places.
Start/Stop is a brilliant debut album from Union Sound Set that is currently residing in my Top 10 Favourite Albums of 2010.
