The Police Tour Europe

John Williams - Monday 08.10.07, 13:52pm

Having lived outside the UK for some time, and not being subjected to the daily music chatter that i enjoyed there, I was recently surprised by a report on Spanish tv showing The Police performing in Madrid.

I had no idea that they had reformed for a european tour, or maybe its worldwide, i still have no idea.

It got me wondering why they would bother and what sort of people would want to see them. After all, their success was some thirty years ago, or more.

It is true to say that they were a very succesful pop band, pumping out number one singles on a regular basis for four or five years.  Their success came on the back of post punks, new wave, an era that bought us such artists as The Jam and Elvis Costello among others with an awful lot to say.

The Police first came to our attention with the excellent, and their best song, Roxanne. The single that famously flopped on first release, but caught everyones imagination on re-release.

The Police would then assault our eardrums with bubble gum pop not dissimilar to Slade from a few years before. They gave us songs that we would sing along to despite the fact that we actually hated them, or at best felt indifferent towards.

The most artistic thing about The Police were the album titles, artistic and exotic such as Outlandos d’Amour and Regatta de blanc.

With the release of Synchronicity, The Police were starting to become a serious band, the music however would not grow up, and the band finally split.

Risking losing his fan base, Sting moved on to the more serious and politically aware music that would continue throughout his career. The Dreams of the Blue Turtles was a firm favourite of mine, although now the contents are dated both musically and politically.

Nothing Like the Sun was and still is an excellent album, Stings best in fact, before he started on his mission of ego expansion and planet saving.

All i can hope is that this is a one off tour and tha band dont decide to go back into the studio, by public demand!
