The Cribs live @ the Royal Function Rooms, Rochester

Terry Lane - Sunday 19.08.12, 21:35pm

The Cribs soaked up the applause from their adoring fans as they walked onto the stage, played a short intro and then blasted into the very wonderful ‘Come On, Be A No-One‘ from their fifth studio album, ‘In the Belly of the Brazen Bull’. What a way for any band to start a sold out, intimate gig as a warm up to their remaining festival appearances at Tennent’s Vital 2012 next week (August 21-22) in Belfast & a return to the Leeds & Reading Festival at the end of August.

I have to confess, I like a few singles by The Cribs but have never seen them live before and wasn’t sure what to expect.  However, the excitement and buzz in the mainly teenage & twenty-something crowd was sure they were going to have a good time; and they were right.  As soon as the band launched into ‘Come On, Be A No-One’ the crowd went wild.  Arms aloft, beer flying and bodies surging forward.  This is what rock ‘n’ roll is all about!

The Cribs are known for their lively performances and they were certainly up for this one.  The only downside of the evening was the small venue was heaving with sweaty bodies and on such a humid evening, was more akin to a sauna with no air conditioning or windows. Someone returned from the toilets only for their glasses to steam up as they entered the main hall.

The Cribs played an awesome set including crowd-pleasing favourites, ‘Be Safe’ with Sonic Youth’s Lee Renaldo on vocals courtesy of a video backdrop and the first live performance of a new song, ‘Pure O‘.

From the moment The Cribs took to the stage to the closing strain of emanating feedback, this was the most exciting, powerful rock ‘n’ roll performance I can remember in the Medway Towns since My Bloody Valentine shook the very foundations of the Medway Arts Centre all those years ago.

The Cribs was the first in a series of gigs in Rochester, Medway from local company, The Preservation Society. Future events include Steve Cradock, Dodgy, John Cooper Clarke & a DJ set from Roni Size.
