The Beat Happening Live Sessions

Terry Lane - Thursday 23.04.09, 08:45am

Following recent packed shows featuring Pete & the Pirates, Selfish C**t and Billy Childish, The Beat Happening Sessions unleash yet another bill of stellar line ups for April and May.

The event format is simple but effective:
1. The writers of beathappening.co.uk interview a super-cool band on stage.
2. The band plays some songs.
3. The interview is published at beathappening.co.uk, Beat Happening magazine’s blog.

On Monday April 27th at the Macbeth is headliner Kid Carpet:

Signed to Rob Da Bank’s Sunday Best label, Ed Patrick, aka Kid Carpet has made a name for himself with his innovative use of Casio keyboards and children’s toys – the Fisher Price toy guitar is a staple part of his set up. Having toured with the likes of Arcade Fire, Willy Mason, The Go! Team and Badly Drawn Boy, his unique brand of DIY ‘shit-hop’ has seen him recognised as one of the most innovative electro artists in the country. Beat Happening will be chatting to him on-stage before his show to find out exactly how you make a musical instrument out of a Tamagotchi – and why!

Support comes from rising stars Post War Years. The new-wave four piece are all about twinkling keys and lush, cascading rhythms. Having supported the likes of Foals and Metronomy, the band are beginning to make a name for themselves in their own right, and play this show shortly after their debut appearance at the SXSW festival in Texas.

Tickets are £5.

On Wednesday May 6th at the Monarch are headliners Zombie Zombie:

Comprised of Etienne Jaumet and Cosmic Neman, Zombie Zombie utilise live drums and vintage synthesisers to create a knee-trembling fusion of krautrock and italo-disco, paying homage to the creepy soundscapes of John Carpenter’s 80’s horror movies. Last year’s debut LP release, ‘A Land for Renegades’ was met with critical acclaim, named in Rough Trade’s top ten albums for 2008.

Support comes from Provokief; otherwise known as former Velofax keysman Alex Vernon-Kell, and from are art-noiseniks Lime Headed Dog, led by former Good Shoes guitarist Joel Cox.

Tickets are £7

Thursday 7th May at the Macbeth, New York experimental rockers Parts & Labor:

The night’s headliners are Parts & Labor. Jetting over from the US to perform at May’s ATP festival, they’ll be making a brief stop-off to play at this show, which, apart from ATP, will be their only UK gig before flying back. Having toured with the likes of Battles and TV on the Radio, they released their fourth album ‘Receivers’, which mixes elements of hardcore, post rock and electronica and was met with unanimously glowing praise. The writers of Beat Happening will be interviewing the band live on-stage and taking part in an audience Q&A before they play in truly intimate surrounding.

Support comes from local hardcore crew Throats.
Tuesday 12th May at Proud Galleries, rising stars of the Bashment scene De Tropix:

De Tropix are producer/vocalist Instinct and singer-songwriter Cherry B. Having started out as a DJ playing hip hop, garage and bashment on pirate radio shows, Instinct has performed in some of London’s top clubs, including Pascha and Ministry of Sound, and St Vincent-born Cherry B cut her teeth on some of the biggest stages in the world, touring the globe as a backing singer and support act for MIA. With slick beats and dancehall/reggae undertones, they are emerging out of the shadow cast by their association with MIA to build an excited following in their own right.

Support is from New York/London electro-rap outfit (and recent Public Enemy touring buddies) Ezra Bang & Hot Machine.

Thursday 21st May at the Lexington, Ralfe Band:

Led by songwriter Oly Ralfe and drummer Andrew Mitchell, Ralfe Band have been gathering a loyal following since the release of their debut LP ‘Swords’ on Skint in 2005. Their latest album, ‘Attic Thieves’ was released on Loose Music late last year, which Mojo subsequently described as ‘a whiskey-soured folk trip from east to west… Ralfe’s moon-eyed beauty is simply the work of one vivid imagination’. Having performed at such festivals as Glastonbury and South by Southwest, they’re perhaps best known for their affiliation with some comedy called The Mighty Boosh, in which they have made cameo appearances, and for whose director (Paul King), Ralfe has scored a film starring Noel Fielding and Julian Barrett, released later this year on Warp Films.

Supporting Ralfe Band are local psych-folkies Lofty Heights and bluesman (and regular Von Bondies/Soledad Brothers-collaborator) Mr David Viner.
