The ABC Club release Thieving Magpie/ Friends Of Music on Things To Make & Do
Thieving Magpie/ Friends Of Music will be released on the Things To Make & Do label on 25th February available on iTunes & also as a very limited edition run of 500 7’’ vinyls.
Standing on stage with her arms behind her back and a look that seems not to see a single figure in a room full of highly expectant fans, Zandra Klievens softly intones ‘Oh you offered, you’d be a friend of mine, we’d have a silhouette’ and so begins the abc club’s ‘Friend of Mine’, one of the most exciting of 2010’s debuts.
The ABC Club’s live reputation has soared thanks to Klievens femme-fatale charisma and songs with razor sharp hooks. Released on Things To Make and Do, double A-side ‘Thieving Magpie/Friend of Mine’ (produced by Joss Worthington and Whiskas of Forward Russia fame respectively) marks the start of special relationship with this Leeds-based five-piece for a lot of music fans out there.
And like many a good couple, The ABC Club exist in opposites: their directness is simultaneously elusive; muscular rhythms run beneath vulnerable vocals; racing guitars wrapped tightly around Rourkesque basslines and restless drums are washed over by an exquisitely nonchalant drawl that lies somewhere between Julian Casablancas, Cat Power and Morrissey.
They are very much their own band though, steering clear of any contrived vogue that might be passing through the music industry. They are returning to the indie vision of old that saw bands with spirited idiosyncrasies and creative independence, as opposed to the generic guitar sludge that is pumped across FM frequencies.
The ABC Club launch their debut single at only their third London show with support from PJ Harvey-inflected, smoky southern dance-hall sounds of Straylings and Slits-esque, lo-fi greats Chapter 24 (‘with justice they will be absolutely massive’ – NME).
