Terry Lane - Thursday 29.05.08, 11:33am

Supergrass play Blastfest in MoscowSupergrass will open their 2008 European tour in Moscow this Sunday (1st June 2008) at the BlastFest Festival.

Supergrass will headline the festival of Russian and UK artists and start promoting their new album Diamond Hoo Ha Man.

Blastfest is an all-day concert at Vinzavod, Moscow’s premier modern art venue.

As well as Supergrass Blastfest will featuring Brett Anderson (formerly of Suede), Russia’s Blast, Punk TV, Vinny Vinny, Moi Raketi Verkh and My Silver Revolver, along with an exhibit by world-renowned English music photographer, Lawrence Watson.

Once an obscure backwater for popular musicians planning a European tour, Moscow has joined the world concert circuit for groups like the White Stripes, Franz Ferdinand, Blur, Placebo, the National and Broken Social Scene.

Blastfest helps to promote the local growing Moscow music scene which offers blends foreign influences with a verve and flair thats distinctly Russian.

Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov wants to turn his city into a world centre for culture and sport, with events like this summer’s Champion’s League Final between Manchester United and Chelsea.

Nash, Blastfest organiser and lead singer of Moscow’s Blast, the Russian capital’s biggest indie rock band suggests the west should look beyond the headlines about a New Cold War. You’ll see young Russians enjoying British culture and rocking out.

“We want to get past the bullshit and show what our two cultures have in common. That’s a big part of why we’re organizing this festival.”

“Bands coudn’t come to Moscow for decades, and even when they could come in the 90’s, only a few did,” says Nash. “Even Boney-M could make a splash here. Now, times have changed. Everybody wants to gig in Moscow.”
