Wherever I Lay My Head is a collection of ten Tom Waits songs recorded by actress Scarlett Johansson, with the help of Yeah Yeah Yeah’s guitarist Nick Zinner and producer David Sitek.
David Bowie has famously given his blessing to the album after adding backing tracks and even Tom Waits has given the album the seal of approval.
Wherever I Lay my Head is an excellent collection of music.
Johansson has a fantastic voice, a strong and confident voice that performs well within it’s limits and is so well suited to these great songs. More of a song stylist than singer her delivery and phrasing are perfect.
Every track on the album is surprisingly good, despite an overall soundscape that makes it sound like the songs were recorded in a factory, it has a sort of industrial feel with fairground waltzers thrown in!
But it works really well and mix is really nice on most of the album. Stand out tracks for me are Falling Down, which is the current single, Wherever I Lay My head and Fannin Street and the beautiful closing track Who Are You.
Song For Jo is another great track written by Johansson a great effort that hold its own, even in such excellent company.
My verdict is that Scarlett Johansson really does the songs justice and has recorded an excellent album, easily my favourite album this year.

The best Tom Waits cover is still by Mugison!
