The classic Rolling Stones 1969 tour documentary Gimme Shelter is to set to be released in DVD format in August this year.
The film has received the full sound and vision restoration treatment and will be accompanied by a 40 page booklet documenting the infamous tour which ended up at the chaotic Altamont Free Festival.
Extras on the DVD release will include an audio commentary from the directors of the film along with backstage outtakes of the band performing at New York’s Madison Square Garden.
A full supporting cast including the likes of Jefferson Airplane, The Flying Burrito Brothers and Ike and Tina Turner feature in the film which is directed by Albert and David Maysles and Charlotte Zwerin.

To hear Mick Jagger snigger at seeing the onscreen murder and the comments made by one of the managers of the gigs about his opinion of Jaggers behavior during the tour reveals that egos were large then and may still be today..no surprise there then….(relating to the original cinema film release I saw then -yea,im an old guy)

He didn’t snigger at all, he was clearly deeply shocked and upset when looking back at the footage with the editor. Why do people feel this need to smear Jagger like this?

Yer I’m old enough to remember seeing this great documentary at the cinema as well, It reinforced what I felt about them, it captured the Stones at there height, Maddison Square Garden Concert was incredible, Midnight Rambler, Little Queenie, Carol; the boys at their very best. Mick was very compationate with the tradgedy at Altamont, trying hard to control the crowd telling them to keep cool. William Black doesn’t know what he’s talking about! I can’t wait to get my copy.
