Firstly, no I was not there! So the fact that Red Hot Chilli Peppers were disappointing could have something to do with the widescreen tv medium I chose over a weekend camping trip, than the fact that they just don’t quite do it for me. On the other hand Smashing Pumpkins sounded every bit as good as their lightshow!
Other highlights from the BBC coverage included top drawer ubiquitous UK summer festival sets from the likes of the very wonderful Arcade Fire, Bloc Party, CSS, The Gossip and the wonderful Klaxons.
Briiliant sets from Jamie T, Kings Of Leon and old rockers Dinosaur Jr, playing a string of wonderful hits from when I felt younger and J. Masic didn’t look like a cross between Grandma Death from Donnie Darko and something from Michael Bentine’s Potty Time.
It was great to hear Freak Scene, Just Like Heaven and Feel The Pain.
Another fantastic set, and probably the best of the lot, was the wild and whacky LCD Soundsystem. Brilliant and very live renditions of Daft Punk Are Playing at my House and North American Scum, among others was only surpassed once, and that was by a truly awesome version of Yeah.
For those unfamiliar with LCD Soundsystem, it is the musical project of one man, James Murphy. The music of LCD Soundsystem is best described as acocktail of rough alt. dance music with a rough frayed and torn punk edge. I like to think of James Murphy as a do-it-yourself styled lo-fi lo-brow Beck.
Many of the sets, including all of the above, are available to watch on the BBC Reading and Leeds Festival website.
