The Prodigy have always been great live performers. From the heady days of illegal raves where they first played to small live crowds in 1990 to headlining prestigious music festivals such as Glastonbury.
When I went to see the Prodigy play live at the Brixton Academy in 2005, I thought it was part of a farewell tour. They had released a greatest hits album, Their Law: The Singles 1990 – 2005 and the tour was dubbed the Greatest Hits Tour where they were not promoting new material but playing a set of hits and live favourites to a faithful following. This followed a less successful fourth studio album Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned in 2004 which had seen the band move away from the rave culture music that had made them famous, towards a more heavy metal sound. For me, the album sounded laboured and bereft of new ideas and so I felt it was time for the madcap madness of these Essex ravers to hang up their smiley t-shirts and call it a day.
But The Prodigy have defied the odds in 2009 and returned with an excellent UK no.1 album, Invaders Must Die which has seen the band return to their rave culture roots with big hits Invaders Must Die, Warriors Dance, Omen and Take Me To The Hospital.
Recent festival appearances at Glastonbury and T In The Park have surprised me as they sound better than ever before; and the stage show is truly phenomenal. Plenty of testosterone and energy as three original members – Liam Howlett, Maxim and Keith Flint are flanked by live guitars and drums, not to mention an amazing light show that will send even mild epileptics to out of space!
On the back of the current album and festival season success, The Prodigy will be playing more live concerts at the end of this year through January 2010.
As always it will be difficult to buy Prodigy tickets as their loyal fans can’t get enough of live favourites such as Firestarter, Breathe, Out Of Space and their first hit single, Charley.
