Muse return home for Devon shows this weekend

John Williams - Tuesday 01.09.09, 16:32pm

300px-muse_facesMulti award winning UK band Muse make a welcome return home to Devon this week where they will perform two concerts at The Den in Teignmouth.

The Muse homecoming gigs will take place on this coming Friday and Saturday, September 4th/5th, before the band head off to the USA where they will provide support for U2 on their mammoth stadium tour.  Muse will return to the UK for a full tour in November after stopping off for gigs throughout Europe.

It was back in the 1990’s that the members of Muse first became acquainted during their time at Teignmouth Community College and Coombeshead College in Devon. Although playing in different band’s to start with, Muse was formed when Matthew Bellamy auditioned for Dominic Howard’s band as guitarist. Howard and Bellamy then talked Christopher Wolstenhome into playing bass – he played drums at the time!

In 1994 the band used the name Rocket Baby Dolls with a goth/glam image to compete in a local battle of the bands. The band won the contest, smashing their equipment in the process.

“It was supposed to be a protest, a statement,” Bellamy said, “so, when we actually won, it was a real shock. A massive shock. After that, we started taking ourselves seriously.” Shortly after the contest, the three decided to forgo university, quit their jobs, change the band name to Muse, and move away from Teignmouth.

From 1998 onwards, through the success of their early EP’s and debut album Showbiz, Muse soon found themselves supporting the likes of Red Hot Chili Peppers and Foo Fighters on their USA tour dates. In 1999/2000 the band had their first taste of some of Europe’s major music festivals.

In the years since, Muse have grown into one of the most exciting rock bands in the UK, if not the World. Their extravagant stage shows have become legendary, they have set their sights at the highest level and seldom fail to deliver.

Muse will be welcomed home by their legions of fans in Devon and the two  concert’s promise to be among the highlights of the current extensive tour.  Don’t miss out, Muse tickets are still available but are bound to sell fast.

apparently this gig was awesome and tickets were sold (mostly) to locals. sort of giving something back to their home town. i does make me sad that in order to make it big bands have to leave home and go to London. is this inevitable?
