Junior Boys’ new single- Hazel

Robbie Spargo - Monday 13.04.09, 16:55pm

Junior Boys’ new single ‘Hazel’, taken from their forthcoming album Begone Dull Care (May 11th), will be released on the 20th April.

The single is their first since the hugely successful 2006 album So This Is Goodbye, which received broad praise for its glitchy electronic and catchy pop tunes, forming part of a retro-electro revival along with the more disco Justice and Simian Mobile Disco and the very similar British group Fujiya & Miyagi.

‘Hazel’ is not so different from this past effort. The vocals are more exaggerated, and sound as if they could have been dug up from the 80s, as do a lot of the retro synths. The chorus features some of those funk-soul cheese harmonies, whilst a saxophone adorns the finale.

Junior Boys aren’t just nostalgic copy merchants on ‘Hazel’, though. Not even do they wallow in their own well-received style on ‘Hazel’. They instead add a hint of more of Justice’s harsh electro synths, with the underlying theme of yearning and longing driving the pulsating, passionate electronics. The catchy chorus is “It’s a hard wait…yeah!”.

With a love of what they do, Junior Boys can hardly go wrong, and on this record the Canadian duo reproduce more of the fine music they have put out over the past few years. ‘Hazel’ will appear on Domino records as a single with 5 different versions of the track.

Junior Boys will tour Europe in the early summer. Here are their planned UK dates, though they are likely to add more, so keep checking their MySpace:

June 5th – The Arches, London
June 6th –Kasbah, Coventry
June 9th – Manchester Club Academy, Manchester
