It was back in 1994 that Green Day released their breakthrough album Dookie, and I can still remember the first time I heard the single Basket Case on UK radio and rushing out to buy the album.
I learned after that Green Day had already been in existence since 1987, having built a cult following as part of the original punk scene at 924 Gilman Street in Berkley California.
While risking the alienation of their grassroot fan base Green Day signed to major record label Reprise in 1994 and the resulting album Dookie went on to sell ten million copies in the US alone and fifteen million copies world wide.
While retaining the guitar fuelled hard hitting vocals of their early punk years Green Day have continued to mature with each new album. Just as adept at producing softer acoustic ballads, surf rock and even ska the band still retain their hard rock image and have become one of the top live acts around.
The American post punk rockers Green Day are currently on the second leg of their European tour, they will be performing in Hamburg in Germany tonight October 8th and will be arriving in the UK via gigs in Sweden, Germany (Dortmund), Holland and Belgium.
The UK leg consists of ten arena concerts starting from October 19th at Glasgow SECC and including shows in London, Belfast, Birmingham, Manchester, Sheffield and one night in Eire in Dublin.
The tour will finish with four more gigs in Europe in Munich, Vienna, Zurich and Milan. Green Day tickets are available for many of the dates throughout October and early November.
