Fighting Fiction – Gig review 7/4/10 @ Talking Heads, Southampton

Fighting Fiction were definitely the liveliest act that we saw all night at Talking Heads in Southampton on Wednesday.

The energy that they expressed put the audience to shame, they just stood/sat around, which was a bit disappointing because the effort the band made was enormous.

I think the venue was a bad choice, not many people like to rave at Talking Heads, which was a bit of a bummer. I think it’s because there is lots of seats, I think they would have been better off playing at another venue like The Joiners in Southampton.

They were a talented band with at least two of their members switching instruments half way through. They were definitely a good band to rock/mosh to, even though you couldn’t always hear what the singer was saying, but that could just be down to the venue.

We thoroughly enjoyed these guys, and recommend everyone that’s into ‘socially aware’ indie, or just anyone that can listen to just about anything, its very hard to label these guys, they have just about everything in their ‘original’ songs.

This is probably because they’ve got a ‘beaten up’ acoustic guitar (it looked liked it had been smashed up regularly) backed up by heavy guitar riffs and a solid drum beat. The singer/ guitarist, Jake, put a lot of power into his vocal performance.

You could see they actually cared about what they were singing about, Sanctuary, which was about immigrants coming to this country, is a great song live. Its heavy drums with its reggae influenced bass made the song stand out from the others.

Overall they were awesome, a must see band live because of their pure energy on stage.
