Following denials from EMI Records that Coldplay would be leaving the beleaguered label, the band have decided to go on strike. Quite what that means for a band that manages an album every couple of years, I am not really sure. I expect it means that they can carry on doing nothing and not feel guilty about it.
None the less Coldplay are on strike, immediately threatening the release date of their current album, known as Prospekt. This will be a cause of much concern financially to EMI who were outraged when share prices in the company dropped when Coldplay’s previous album was postponed.
The band are striking in protest against the departure of long time boss Tony Wadsworth, saying that “Tony was the reason a lot of bands signed to EMI, artists want to work with music people not finance guys.”
With respect to the album the band have said, “Why would you want to release an album with a record company that is in the midst of massive lay offs”. Fair point I would say.
Also threatening the same action is all round superstar Robbie Williams, who also has an album due for release, but is reluctant to let EMI handle the promotion. His main concern being that new owners Terra Firma have cleared out key members of staff including chairman Tony Wadsworth in a bid to cut costs. He believes that there is no one currently at the company that has any experience of the market.
