Mark Stewart makes an apocalyptic return amidst an increasingly agitated atmosphere and is releasing his latest single, “Nothing Is Sacred” as a free download.

The track is a damning indictment of greed in a year riddled by riots, revolutions, occupations and increasing collapse of the global financial system. A collaboration with Crass vocalist Eve Libertine, German elector monsters Slope and Dan Catsis from The Pop Group on bass “Nothing Is Sacred” has a howling funk-rock and unyielding political attack evolved from the sessions for Mark Stewart’s forthcoming album, and is the now-deleted AA of his limited 7” cover of the T.Rex classic “Children of the Revolution”.

Mark Stewart is one of those rare artists that has not only remained steadily prolific over the course of three decades, he continues to inspire with his pioneering sonics, viciously astute social observations and uncompromising manifestos.

Nick Cave, Alec Empire, Bobby Gillespie, Trent Reznor and Tricky amongst many others have cited him as a major influence, as well as a host of current provocateurs like Factory Floor, fellow Bristol producers Kevin Martin (The Bug, King Midas Sound) and Kahn.

His 11th-hour appearance at St. Vincent’s recent London show duetting on his early Pop Group track, “She’s Beyond Good and Evil” elicited a breathless response from critics (“a firefight of vocoder-distorted vocals and funk-rock rhythms” – The Guardian) and St. Vincent herself: “I did not want that song to end ever! It’s crazy to get to play with one of my heroes, I kinda can’t believe it.”

“Nothing Is Sacred” by Mark Stewart is available as a free download from www.markstewartmusic.com.

On March 26th 2011 ITV filmed a special concert in London, featuring guitar legend Bill Nelson, leader of pop art bands Be-Bop Deluxe and Red Noise. Bill Nelson left high profile music some years back, due to his dislike of the music industry / media circus. However, his influence on modern music is immense. Admired by Paul McCartney, Brian May, David Bowie, Kate Bush, Eno, Prince, The Foo Fighters, The Darkness, My Chemical Romance et al. I’m delighted to announce that the video of this unique evening at ITV Legends is now available on to buy. In case you are still wondering who Bill Nelson is, here’s some background.

Bill Nelson’s career started with 1970’s Art School band Be-Bop Deluxe, where he had considerable success with classic albums like Futurama, Sunburst Finish and Drastic Plastic. By the mid 70’s Be-Bop Deluxe were conquering America but Bill was disaffected by the celebrity lifestyle and its requirements of him. He disbanded Be-Bop Deluxe and formed Red Noise, a synth / new age band way ahead of its time, paving the way for 80’s acts like Gary Numan, A Flock of Seagulls and many others. Red Noise’s music was jagged and edgy.

EMI dropped Nelson at this point since he refused to perform ‘more of the same’. Shortly after Bill pioneered Indie music, releasing albums made in his own studio on his own ‘Cocteau’ record label. Many of these home-made creations were of superior quality to what others have since recorded in the most professional of recording studios.

Bill Nelson’s heart is firmly fixed within the inventor’s domain, with a more or less continuous stream of musical creativity. Much of Bill’s work can be accessed through his website ‘Dreamsville’.

Nelson’s latest works are mostly lush ambient soundscapes, not typical of his recent ITV release, which is a must-have release for Be-Bop Deluxe / Red Noise / music lovers. Here’s an example of Bill Nelson’s less commercial work, taken from his recent performance at the Sheffield ‘Sensoria’ Arts Festival – music which owes no regard to an X-Factor culture.

I wrote a personal cameo about Bill Nelson in the book Sex, Leadership and Rock’n’Roll, as he is a master of continuous creativity and reinvention. A copy of the cameo can be found at the Academy of Rock.

Having released the second single Deadliest Catch from their upcoming second album this week, Lower Than Atlantis have announced that they will be streaming the new album World Record ahead of it’s release on April 25th.

You can hear the new album in its entirety on the Lower Than Atlantis My Space now, before its official release date on April 25th.

The bands intense bond with their fans is set to shine through with the music video for ‘Deadliest Catch’ for which they are accepting fan submissions to be included in the lyric-themed concept.

From the opening life-on-the-road anthem ‘(Motor) Way of Life’ right through to closer ‘R.O.I.,’ ‘World Record’ is an album bursting with exuberance and packed with massive rock hooks. Lower Than Atlantis prove that they’ve hit their stride, honing their songwriting skills to pure brilliance following the release of 2010’s critically acclaimed debut ‘Far Q.’

High octane tracks like first single ‘Beech Like The Tree’ and ‘Bug’ appear alongside more contemplative compositions like ‘High At Five’ – the sound of a band carving out their own identity in today’s music scene – and ‘Another Sad Song’ which is as melancholy as its title suggests. Despite the contrasting dynamics on the album, one thing that all the tracks have in common is a keen sense of melody and crafty riffery, backed up by a rhythm section that pulls no punches.

Mike Duce (vocals/guitar) says of the progression the band have made for the creation of this album:

“Writing was pretty natural because we’re with each other so much, we’ve all been listening to the same music and had the same influences. When it came to working on the songs, we all kind of knew where we were going. Recording was very efficient! We’d already demo’d the album live and then in a studio before recording the real thing so we knew exactly what we were playing and how we were playing it.

The tunings for most of the songs have dropped two whole steps to add a darker feel. The tempo of the songs has slowed down too to give a more powerful feel and to make sure the listener definitely has time to get the message. There’s less of a jokey undertone lyrically so I guess it’s more ‘grown up’.”

Buzzin Media are excited to introduce to you ’La Fin Absolute du Monde’. If you believe in the immaculate conception and that KFC should be eaten with a knife and fork, I strongly recommend you step away from the computer right now and go make yourself a cup of cocoa with a sprinkling of minature marshmallows for good measure. I am a huge fan of anyone who dares to be different and thinks outside of the box and La Fin Absolute du Monde tick all those boxes.

La Fin Absolute du Monde are Jason and Cyndy ‘Chicky’ Myles from San Francisco. They get my vote immediately for living in San Francisco, which is one of the coolest cities I have visited to date, however, their music is just as diverse, fascinating and exciting. Although Jason has recorded on hiphop albums and played with local San Francisco area based bands, his heart has been Metal to the core. With influences such as Prince, Dave Mustaine, James Hetfield, Jeff Hanneman, Kerry King, Dimebag, and EVH.

I heard La Fin Absolute du Monde a few weeks ago on Soundcloud. I was immediately entranced by their style of music and by Chicky’s vocals, who may be singing some very dark lyrics at times. Their fusion of Classical and Rock seduced me to listen to more of their tracks. My eyes scanned their profile and immediately I was drawn to ‘Spank’ (Rough Mix). We are all aware that sex sells and so I pushed play! The vocals are delightfully sassy and the rhythm of the percussion is brilliantly seductive. The piano and chimes are also tantalising and try to manipulate the ears into believing this is a sweet natured track. ’Spank’ (Rough Mix) is a clear example of how there is a piece of music for every life experience under the stars!

Spank (Rough Mix) by La Fin Absolute du Monde

Jason still has his own fiery and violent guitar-playing style that he mixes warmly with melodic, ambient melodies and tones. Chicky grew up being formally trained as a classical musician and has toured all over North America and parts of Europe with an Asian cover band. Together, they have achieved a sound like no other, applying all their very different influences and inspirations to lovingly complement each other. ‘Why So Serious’ is a perfect example of their musical diversity and funky experimentation and has an incredibly addictive bassline.

Why So Serious? by La Fin Absolute du Monde

La Fin Absolute du Monde informed me that their aim is to utilize dark, lovely and ambient timbres and ignore conventional structures and boundaries to provide an intense and adventureful musical-listening experience. Here are two people who come from entirely different worlds, both enamored by smart people who love smart music. Their Soundcloud profile is an exhibition of incredible sounds including ‘She’s Got To Be A Pirate’ and I recommend a listen of their Soundcloud profile for those of you who dare to listen and think outside of the box!

They make a bit of an odd couple but the Kingston Ontario based duo PS I Love You sure know how to kick out an incredible noise as you can hear in the video ‘Get Over‘ shown below, an incredible taster from their debut album Meet Me At The Muster Station which is released on April 26th.

The ten track album is a relentless listen that grips and pulls the listener through just under thirty-minutes of squalling Marshall feedback, searing solos, soaring melodies and rock-steady beats that will surely be considered one of this year’s finest debuts.

Originally the solo project for multi-instrumentalist Paul Saulnier who has performed in everything from a country-rock band to an improvised noise duo, PS I Love You was intended to be his experimental, pop music outlet using guitar looping pedals, keyboards with some gadgets and gimmicks. The addition of Benjamin Nelson on drums suddenly transformed the bands little songs into mini, soaring rock anthems.

On the album’s release in North America last year Meet Me At The Muster Station drew critical praise from the likes of Pitchfork, Village Voice, NME, Eye, Exclaim, Now, Toronto Star, The Fly, Gigwise, LA Weekly, SF Weekly, Portland Mercury, San Diego City Beat, The Stranger, Washington Post, Brooklyn Vegan, Consequence of Sound, PopMatters, Pop Tarts Suck Toasted, CMJ, Prefix, Treble, and KCRW.

Exclaim called it the number four album of 2010 and added;

“It’s hard to believe that the stunning Meet Me at the Muster Station is PS I Love You’s debut. Arriving fully formed, this Kingston duo delivers its catchy hooks with brute force, pummelling listeners with fuzzy guitars and thundering rhythms. And even if you won’t be able to sing along with frontman Paul Saulnier’s strangled yelps, songs like “Facelove” and “2012″ will be stuck in your head for weeks. Savage noise freak-outs have never sounded quite so palatable.”

The classic Derek & The Dominos album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs was re-issued last week to mark the 40th anniversary of it’s original release. Buzzin Music have five copies of the Deluxe Edition double CD to give away to the winners of our free to enter ‘Layla’ competition.

Derek & The Dominos was formed by Eric Clapton following a year touring the US with Delaney & Bonnie & Friends, the rhythm section of the band became firm friends during the tour and joined Clapton in 1970 with the intention of recording new material.

The resulting Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs became an instant classic album, fusing Clapton’s r&B and blues influences with the Southern blues and gospel of the USA from Bobby Whitlock and Duane Allman, with more than hint of the fabulous blues/country rock of Delaney & Bonnie.

It is common knowledge that the title track’ Layla’ was written by Clapton as an ode to his friend George Harrison’s wife Patti Boyd, the unattainable ‘Princess Layla’. Despite their friendship Clapton would end up stealing Harrison’s wife and making her his own. For a while anyway.

Buzzin Music ‘Layla’ Competition

This Buzzin Media Competition has now closed

To enter the free ‘Layla’ competition and a chance to win one of five copies of Layla and Assorted Love Songs Deluxe Edition double CD, all you need to do is answer the following question:

Who provided the inspiration for the song Layla by Derek & The Dominos?

a) Patti Smith

b) Patti Boyd

c) Patsy Kensit

Send your entries to comps@buzzinmedia.co.uk with “Layla Comp” in the subject line with your answer and your full address and contact telephone number.

This Buzzin Media Competition ends on April 25th 2011. The editor will randomly choose 5 winners.

The editor’s choice is final.

The 40th Anniversary edition of Layla and Other assorted Love Songs by Derek & The Dominos is available now in Deluxe Edition from all usual digital and retail outlets.

By 1970 Eric Clapton had already enjoyed more acclaim then many musicians achieve in a life time, from the R&B of the Yardbirds through the first Supergroup collectives of Cream and Blind Faith, the guitarist appeared to have finally found what he was looking for while touring the USA with the excellent Delaney & Bonnie and Friends in 1969.

In an effort to recreate the friendly, leaderless, family like atmosphere of Delaney & Bonnie, Clapton recruited the rhythm section from that band to join himself and a guesting Duane Allman, to become Derek & The Dominos in 1970.

Having toured and played together on George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass solo album, the band already sounded as though they had been together for years and work soon began on the album Layla.

Forming a strong song writing axis with Memphis born Bobby Whitlock (keyboards/vocals)their respective influences presented an incredible showcase for the band with an eclectic mix of blues, r&b, rock, soul, country and gospel inflected tunes.

Layla & Other Assorted Love Songs captures the band as a genuine collective of musicians not only at the top of their game, but enjoying the moment and producing arguably, the best Eric Clapton album ever.

Tracks like I Looked Away, Anyday, Keep On Groving, Tell The Truth and Why Does Love Got To Be So Bad have long since become standards and most covered tracks of the era, while the inclusion of Jimi Hendrix’s excellent Little Wing is simply inspired.

In the context of the album, the full length version of the single Layla feels as fresh as the day it was cut, clocking in at over 7 minutes, like most of the tracks on the album that isn’t quite long enough and I found myself not wanting it to finish, much like every other song on the album.

That for me is the beauty of Layla & Other Assorted Love Songs, it doesn’t rely on self indulgent guitar or drum solos but focuses on a complete band at the top of their game.

The Deluxe Edition version comes with a bonus disc featuring some of the songs recorded for a second Derek & The Dominos album that never happened and live appearance on the US tv show The Johnny Cash Show.

Layla & Other Assorted Love Songs has been blowing me away for the last week or so, it still sounds fantastic and fresh, feeling at time more like a stonking jam session to the credit of producer Tom Dowd.

Without doubt a stunning re-issue and not to be missed.

Layla & Other Assorted Love Songs is re-issued today, Monday March 29th in the following collectors formats:

1. Single Disc Version CD

2. 2CD Deluxe Edition

6. iTunes LP

In 1994 Jeff Buckley released his debut, and due to his untimely death in 1996, his only studio album. At the time my musical tastes were in a different corner and I merely acknowledged that Grace appeared in many ‘Best Albums of the Year’ lists, including #1 in Mojo magazine. But I didn’t read any reviews and didn’t knowingly hear any tracks.

Initially album sales didn’t match the critical acclaim. But like many others I was a late-comer to Grace. In 2006, British Hit Singles & Albums and NME organised a poll of which, 40,000 people worldwide voted for the 100 best albums ever and Grace was placed at #23 on the list. If ever an album suffered by being released ‘out of time’ with the music trends of the day, Jeff Buckley’s Grace is it.

Four singles were released in 1995 (Grace, Last Goodbye, So Real & Eternal Life) but like the album, all failed to make the UK Top 40 which leads me to think I wasn’t the only one to believe the timing was wrong rather than the music of Jeff Buckley. In 1994 the UK music scene was blabbering on about the BritPop war between Blur and Oasis and how Suede was better than I could ever imagine.

My first son was born in 1995 and sometime before and after I appeared to spend more time in Mothercare and the Early Learning Centre than I did in any music shops. It was therefore with outstretched arms that I welcomed the saviour of online music file sharing. While pretending to work in my office I was able to listen to music… again. I’m not quite sure when I first listened to Grace but I do remember downloading it as I was intrigued to know what Tim Buckley’s son sounded like. Thereafter I went out and bought the CD, underlining the argument that online music file sharing doesn’t always lead to musicians going penniless, but that’s for another article.

Because of its popularity after it was originally released, I’m assuming others had a similar experience to me that when I was in the right frame of mind to listen to Grace, it really blew my mind.

The album begins with Mojo Pin drifting around like a ship lost in the mist, gradually appearing only to drift away again into something mystical. Then it surges forward with thunder and crashing waves as it lands on the shore with a final burst of energy.

Mojo Pin is nothing like any other song from the 1990’s that I have listened to. In fact it’s difficult to say which decade it belongs too. This can be said for much of the album. Both voice and music has a theatrical rock sound that possibly owes more to the 1970’s. But now I am listening, its clear Jeff Buckley’s voice is truly something special, just like his father.

The album continues with the beautiful warm warbling of the title track Grace. Buckley’s voice is infectious, beautiful and full of life. Listening again tonight to the track Grace, I can clearly hear the progressive rock and over-the-top operatic references made by Muse and The Darkness, among others.

Last Goodbye is my favourite song on the album. A truly beautiful pop song complete with a full string accompaniment that perfectly melds with this pop song about love. Again Buckley hits a vocal range that I have only heard from one other artist, Tim Buckley.

Four songs in, and another surprising element to Grace is the choice and inclusion of several cover versions. Whether Jeff Buckley didn’t feel he had enough quality self-penned songs to complete Grace or he really didn’t care less for the rules of what he should and shouldn’t include on a debut album.

The album takes its first twist and change in mood with the inclusion of Lilac Wine, a slow ballad written in 1950, it was originally a UK hit single for Elkie Brooks in 1978 but had previously been recorded by other female singers including Eartha Kitt & Nina Simone.

From a ballad the album picks up the tempo with one of the most rocking tracks on the album, So Real which like previous tracks has its soft, loud, soft moments in a post-Nirvana world and ends with Jeff Buckley’s trademark screeching and warbling.

Next the album drops once more with a version of Leonard Cohen’s beautiful song, Hallelujah (from Lenard Cohen’s 1984 album ‘Various Positions’. Buckley based his version not on Cohen’s recording but John Cale’s version which includes a different arrangement and lyrics.

Jeff Buckley’s Hallelujah gained popularity in December 2008 when it was re-released on the back of the X Factor winner Alexandra Burke’s version which kept it from becoming the Christmas no.1.

Lover, You Should Have Come Over sits between Hallelujah and the most surprising of all cover versions on Grace. Who else would have included the hymn Corpus Christi Carol, let alone got away with it! If this song was included for no other reason than as for Jeff Buckley to impress with his angelic voice, then it works.

Eternal Life has a post-grunge angst about it. In fact it wouldn’t sound out of place on a Pearl Jam album; and following the high standards of the previous eight tracks I’m afraid it’s probably the albums’ weakest link which is down to the timid production. There’s a much improved, more raucous live version on the bonus CD of the Grace – Legacy Edition (see below) which unleashes the track like a wild animal that sounds drugged on opiates on the original album.

The final track of the album, Dream Brother begins with a snake charming middle-eastern vibe. The sound swirls like a smoke-filled haze. Dream Brother drifts off into a completely different place for the final five minutes of the album; and after hearing live recordings where the group play the song with more venom and power, like Eternal Life, the album version sounds weak in comparison and doesn’t do the song justice. However, on hearing the original album for the first time, the songs sounded great to me.

Over the past 10 years Grace hasn’t strayed far from my home CD player and occasionally makes its way into the car, too. It is a classic album where the music perfectly complements one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard. It’s a classic album by virtue of the fact that like other albums including The Beatles’ Let It Be, London Calling by The Clash and Led Zeppelin II I have never got tired of playing the album in its entirety.

In 2004 Grace was re-released with a bonus CD of alternate versions and unreleased cover versions including the MC5’s Kick Out The Jams, Bob Dylan’s Mama, You Been On My Mind and great versions of Robert Johnson’s Preachin’ The Blues and Leiber & Stoller’s Alligator Wine (the latter sung in the spirit of Captain Beefheart).

Unlike other posthumous re-issues which are clearly nothing more than a money-making venture, the bonus CD is well worthy of a few extra pounds of your money.

Legacy also includes a DVD with a short film – The Making of Grace and five promo videos for Grace, Last Goodbye, So Real, Eternal Life and Forget Her.
