Blink-182 have been confirmed to headline an Eden Session on Sunday July 8.

The Californian three-piece come to Eden following the release of their acclaimed sixth studio album Neighborhoods last September, their first record since the band split in 2005.

Blink-182, otherwise known as Mark Hoppus, Tom DeLonge and Travis Barker, are probably best known for 1999’s seminal Enema of the State, which went on to sell 15m copies and spawned perhaps the band’s most well-known singles All the Small Things, What’s My Age Again and Adam’s Song.

Enema of the State was Blink-182’s third studio album, following 1994’s Cheshire Cat and 1996’s Dude Ranch. It preceded 2001’s Take Off Your Pants and Jacket and their self-titled fifth studio album, released in 2003 and heralding a more mature sound for the trio.

The band split in 2005 but reformed in 2009. New album Neighborhoods continues the band’s progression into more mature themes.

Blink-182 has sold more than 27 million albums in total and has won multiple awards, including Best New Act at the 2000 MTV Europe Music Awards and Best Rock Act at the same ceremony in 2001.

Martin Williams, Eden’s Marketing Director, said:

“Blink-182 are a great coup for the Eden Sessions. The band defined the pop-punk sound of the late nineties and early noughties, mixing catchy guitar hooks with lyrics that tackle serious issues in a humorous way. We’re really excited to be part of Blink’s return to the top and can’t wait to hear them perform songs from their long-awaited new album at Eden.”

Blink-182 are the second announcement for the 2012 Eden Sessions. UK soul and hip-hop star Plan B will headline a show on Friday July 6. More acts will be announced soon.

The Eden Sessions enter their eleventh year in 2012, following an acclaimed series of gigs in 2011, featuring Brandon Flowers and Pendulum among others. Previous years have seen performances from acts including Oasis, Kasabian, Mumford & Sons, Florence and the Machine and Muse.

Eden’s Inside Track scheme returns for the 2012 Eden Sessions. Members get a guaranteed pair of tickets to each show, with seven days to decide whether to buy them before they go on general sale. As well as priority booking and the latest Sessions news, Inside Track also gives members the chance to win exclusive Eden Sessions prizes.

Tickets to the Blink-182 Eden Session cost £35 plus booking fee and go on sale to Inside Track members today (Tuesday January 24) and on general sale at 6pm on Tuesday January 31. To book, contact the Eden Box Office on 01726 811972 or visit www.edensessions.com.

Rounding off an exceptional year that has included headlining festivals, Main Stage sets at Reading and Leeds and a chart bothering album, Frank Turner will release his new single ‘Wessex Boy’ on 28th November through Xtra Mile Recordings. Frank Turner has also confirmed his biggest headline show to date at London’s Wembley Arena for April 2012.

The third single to be lifted from the Top 12 album ‘England Keep My Bones’ it encapsulates the album’s feeling of nostalgia, reminiscing about home towns and re-visiting cosy childhood memories after a long time away. And in some uncanny cosmic timing it provides the perfect soundtrack as the winter nights draw in and attention is turned to going home for Christmas.

It also echoes Frank Turner’s return to these shores after months of touring North America and Europe. He’s back for his huge UK headline tour with his band The Sleeping Souls. Three of the six dates are now completely sold out with the others selling fast.

Frank Turner UK Live dates:

November
22 Bournemouth O2 Academy
23 Newport, Newport Centre
24 Birmingham O2 Academy SOLD OUT
25 Glasgow Barrowlands
26 Manchester O2 Apollo SOLD OUT
27 London HMV Hammersmith Apollo SOLD OUT

As the last remaining tickets get snapped up plans are already underway for a humdinger of a one-off event for April 2012. Frank Turner’s Friday the 13th at Wembley Arena will be an extra special one-day festival-like extravaganza offering fans an incredible line-up of musical gems.

Frank Turner Tickets are on sale from 14th October.

Back to this year though and November will also see the release of Frank’s ‘Second Three Years’ – a collection of live tracks, sessions, cover versions, b-sides and lost songs from the past three years. Out on 21st November it features live recordings of the traditional folk song ‘Barbara Allen’ from Shepherd’s Bush and the show-stopping ‘Father’s Day’ from Union Chapel both in 2009; covers versions of Springsteen, Nirvana, NOFX and Flanders & Swann to name a few as well as session tracks from Radio 1 and the bonus tracks featured on the limited deluxe edition of ‘England Keep My Bones’.

And finally on 10th November Frank Turner will be performing at the inaugural AIM Music Awards in London where he is nominated for Hardest Working Act and Best Live Act.

Sailor Jerry Presents Cerebral Ballzy complete the line-up for this year’s Sailor Jerry music series, with the five piece heading to The Macbeth, Hoxton on Thursday 10th November.

Brooklyn hardcore punk rockers Cerebral Ballzy will give London a real taste of New York by bringing their riotous brand of 1980’s hardcore and punk rock to an eager Hoxton crowd. Performing a wide range of tracks from their self-titled debut album ‘Cerebral Ballzy’, the crew that have been described as ‘Brooklyn’s wildest band’ are sure to finish the Sailor Jerry Presents series with an almighty bang.

Cerebral Ballzy along with all Sailor Jerry Presents… acts, share the attitude and energy shared by the late Norman ‘Sailor Jerry’ Collins, the tattoo pioneer known to many as simply ‘The Man’.

Tickets for the show cost £5 (with no booking fee) and are available from www.sailorjerry.co.uk from Friday , with tickets also available on the door for £6. The gig rounds up sell out events this year in Brighton, Glasgow, Manchester and Bristol.

The band, led by energetic frontman Honor Titus, will demonstrate the true meaning of Collins’ motto of ‘Originate, don’t imitate’. As the band unleash a relentless onslaught of hardcore rock and fast-paced punk, Sailor Jerry will be mixing classic serves of Sailor & cola and Sailor & ginger which will be on offer throughout the night – with a couple on the house to kickstart the night

The Sailor Jerry Presents gig series follows a long association with music in the UK and the US. Sailor Jerry rum works with like-minded musicians and artists who share an approach to authenticity, dedication and non-conformist attitude. Cerebral Ballzy join a list of bands who have performed in the past two years, including The King Blues, Pulled Apart by Horses, The Joy Formidable and Mystery Jets, who have since gone on to secure wider critical acclaim.

Cerebral Ballzy play live in London @ The Macbeth, Hoxton on Thursday 10th November.

Crazy Arm new single, ‘Tribes‘, is to be released on Monday 15th August followed by a new album, ‘Union City Breath‘ due for release on 10th October 2011. Both are to be released on vinyl, CD & digital download via Xtra Mile Recordings (UK & rest of the world) & Gunner Records (mainland Europe).

Devon folk roots-punks, Crazy Arm new single is the first release ahead of their imminent new album, ‘Union City Breath‘. A highlight of this live favourite, it is a song of two distinct parts, combining the band’s love of Springsteen, gospel and honest punk rock. The lyrics are an indictment of man-made structures of violence and a call for a return to simpler, more ethically-centred ways of interacting. Also on the record: the voice of Victoria Butterfield (who sang on the band’s last single ‘Sweet Storm‘) and keys courtesy Patrick James Pearson. The single will coincide with the band’s debut acoustic tour in August with Cory Branan and Sam Russo in August.

The follow-up to 2009’s dramatic debut, ‘Born To Ruin‘, ‘Union City Breath‘ was produced/engineered once again by Peter Miles (King Blues, The Computers, Sonic Boom Six) at his new studio in the South Devon countryside. Taking its cue from the spurious idea of the Big Society, ‘Union City Breath‘ is a reminder that all societies are made by people and can be changed or at least challenged by people whenever they see fit. The band will be touring the album throughout the UK in September, and are the main support to Against Me! on their European/UK tour in November.

Crazy Arm set up camp in mid-2006. Not easy to categorise, and all the better for it, their sound is an accumulation of decades of influence and inspiration: rooted in hardcore/punk, 1960’s protest folk/country and classic rock’n'roll, combined with a grass-roots political overview that embraces anti-war, anti-fascist and pro-community activism.

They have toured extensively throughout the UK and Europe many times, sharing stages with the likes of Frank Turner, Chuck Ragan, The Xcerts, Bangers, Apologies I Have None, The Cut Ups, Two Cow Garage and Sonic Boom Six; and have made appearances at festivals including 2000 Trees, NASS, Leopallooza, Boardmasters, Reading and Leeds.

Crazy Arm ‘Union City Breath‘ tracklist:

Devon folk punks, Crazy Arm, release their new single, ‘Tribes‘, on 1st August, the first release ahead of their imminent new album, ‘Union City Breath‘.

Already a live favourite, ‘Tribes/Animals‘, is a song of two distinct parts, combining the band’s love of Springsteen, gospel and honest punk rock. The lyrics are an indictment of man-made structures of violence and a call for a return to simpler, more ethically-centred ways of interacting.

Also on the record, the voice of Victoria Butterfield (who sang on the band’s last single ‘Sweet Storm‘) and keyboards courtesy of Patrick James Pearson.

The follow-up to 2009’s dramatic debut, ‘Born To Ruin’, ‘Union City Breath‘ is currently in the finishing stages and is being produced/engineered, once again, by Peter Miles (King Blues, The Computers, Sonic Boom Six, Dry The River) at his new studio deep in the South Devon countryside.

Taking its cue from the spurious idea of the Big Society, ‘Union City Breath‘ is a reminder that all societies are made by people and can be changed or at least challenged by people whenever they see fit.

The most authoritarian of institutions and the largest of multinational corporations are still only the product of human endeavour, propped up by other people with the same global interests – they can be, will be and are dismantled if and when they continue to pose a threat and cause violence upon ordinary people.

The band are due to play Shepherds Bush Empire with Social Distortion on 7th July amongst other shows and festival appearances including 2000 Trees and Boardmasters. The album will coincide with a comprehensive tour of the UK and mainland Europe, while the single will coincide with the band’s debut acoustic tour in August with Cory Branan and Sam Russo.

Art Brut Live @ The Lexington, London on Friday 3rd June 2011

The soliloquy is a very under used form in the history of pop music. With good reason. It is completely unsuited to a medium where the optimum format is a blast of joyous energy with musical accompaniment lasting a maximum of 3 mins 20 seconds. In the wrong hands it could also prove to be a dire form of entertainment; overblown, pompous and ripe for pseud’s corner.

This worries Eddie Argos not a jot. He has crafted his own stage personna that is barely any different from his off-stage one; funny, witty (there is a difference), larger-than-life (excuse the cliche), talkative, meandering of thought and utterly charming. The fact that he cannot sing doesn’t worry Eddie either; it is a cause for celebration. Imagine being as good a lyricist as he is and then being hung-up by the fact that you cannot sing.

He steps out into the audience mid-song (‘Modern Art‘) having calmed the band to a whisper and proceeds to narrate a dream. Except this is not a real dream, just something he’s making up on the spot, for effect; like the kid in the playground angling to be the centre of attention; or is it a technique to disarm the bully from stealing his bag of rhubarb and custards? Perhaps more Ronnie Corbett than Bill Wagstaff, Eddie’s soliloquy (or shaggy dog story) of his visit to the Van Gogh museum (he rightly asides that “it is pronounced Van Goff”), goes on and on. In doing so, he gets every member of the standing audience to sit on the floor like it’s an infants’ school assembly.

The story winds up with the mantra “I will buy an Art Brut t-shirt.” It’s a masterclass in crowd control (and mind control?) and is both oddly compelling and very funny.

Eddie has altogether different worries on his mind that he has shared with his devotees over the course of four albums of exuberant power pop. Anxieties that include unrequited schoolboy crushes, that haunt him two decades hence; why complete berks always get the girls he fancies; even when you get the girl there is the fear or danger of sexual impotence; there’s not having enough pocket money; and what will his parent’s think of all this i.e. not having a proper job, and living off Tesco’s Value noodles at the age of 31.

This is his current dilemma; His band have not had so much success that the cash has rolled in, so that they could all do as they please. Neither have they been shit and completely ignored, in which case by now they would have given up the ghost (I can tell Eddie that this is not necessarily the case. Just don’t ask me how I know). No, Art Brut remain somewhere in a misty middle ground; being mildly popular; popular enough to persuade them to keep going, to stave off the horrors of a day job, but not enough to earn a living wage.

Anyway, tonight is the fifth of a five-night residency at London’s finest small venue. I have it on good authority that the set list (and jokes) have been different each night. With four albums under the belt (spoken word versions of Buzzcocks’ Love Bites is my cack-handed idiot’s guide to the uninitiated) half of tonight’s set is taken from the stunningly good 2005 debut Bang Bang Rock ‘n’ Roll; starting with the awesome album opener and breakthrough single, ‘Formed a Band’, (ever so slightly lacklustre tonight) and encoring with the aptly explosive title track (which was absolutely wonderful).

Yep, it took two or three songs to really get going, but boy, when they did…

A mere three songs are showcased from the new Brilliant! Tragic! album. As with the second and third albums, Art Brut’s buzzsaw sound has barely evolved at all (and why should it?), but Eddie’s not lost any of his peculiar magic with a lyric. He was witty and insightful on the debut and remains so. Witness one of the newies played tonight, ‘Martin Kemp Welch 5-a-side Rules’;

“I still see every schoolboy crush as a missed opportunity. I want to turn up at their houses, see if they remember me… Self portraits drawn in charcoal and chalk. A wavy line where I tried to talk.”

You can keep your Morrissey, I’m with Argos.

Second and third albums, It’s a Bit Complicated and Art Brut versus Satan, were both under-represented, my own favourite ‘Pump up the Volume’ failed to make the cut, but most of the fans’ favourites got an airing; ‘Rusted Guns of Milan’, ‘Good Weekend’, ‘DC Comics & Chocolate Milkshakes’, ‘Direct Hit’ and, inevitably, ‘Emily Kane’.

Art Brut are one of the most exciting and vibrant bands I’ve ever seen and have been so on all three occasions I’ve seen them; two of which have been in tiny venues. All five Bruts play with verve, energy and big smiles. Stand-up drummer Mikey Breyer must have steam-powered pistons for arms and legs; he is a mighty fine drummer.

Bassist Freddy Feedback, in fifties polka dot dress, her smile never once slips as she mouths every word and I’m delighted to see that the rumour that Jasper Future had left the group (I think I started it – got the wrong end of a Facebook bulletin) proves erroneous. He and other guitarist Ian Catskilkin throw rock star poses throughout; not entirely ironic, but not quite Rossi-Parfitt either.

Despite Eddie’s tales of the lovelorn schoolboy, written in a poster-bedecked comic-strewn bedroom, conveying a certain joie de vivre is what Art Brut do best and none do it better.

Guitarist Joel Schneider and drummer Ethan Jacobson epitomize the purest distillation of rock, blues, and garage punk. Their sonic chemistry became immediately apparent when they began playing together as My Goodness. Think Jon Spencer Blues Explosion head on collision with White Stripes with bigger balls!

“Schneider struts and hollers, the quiver in his voice and the confidence in his bluesy guitar swagger are reminiscent of Jon Spencer’s brash balls, but with more Fugazi-esque finesse,” says DJ Hannah Levin following a live in-studio session with KEXP. “He and drummer Ethan Jacobsen […] have that unmistakable lightning in a bottle quality.”

My Goodness was cited by U.S City Arts magazine as one of 2010’s best new bands. They are described by Chris Kornelis, Music Editor for Seattle Weekly, as a band who “[…] packs an incendiary live show to further the parallels,” and as “the standard against which I’m measuring everyone else doing rock in Seattle,” by Josh Lavseth, co-founder of Sound on the Sound.

My Goodness have just released their debut, self-titled album with Seattle label Sarathan Records.

Pump up the volume & watch the video for the single I’ve Got a Notion and make up your own mind. Fuzzy guitars & pounding drums… we think they’re awesome.

Poly Styrene the former singer with punk pop group X-ray Specs died of cancer last night at the age of 53. Poly Styrene, whose real name was Marianne Joan Elliott-Said, revealed earlier this year that she had undergone treatment for breast cancer.

This after Poly made a comeback by releasing a one-off seasonal single Black Christmas and new album, Generation Indigo in March.

But she will be best remembered and loved as the little girl with a big voice, colourful and playful fashion and braces on her teeth; and wonderful songs like Oh Bondage Up Yours!, Germfree Adolescence and Identity.

Long-time friend Symond Lawes confirmed the tragic news today on Poly Styrene’s Facebook page:

“I just spoke to her mother and its very true, she passed away quietly last night, her mother and daughter were with her, bless you Marianne. Symond xxx”

Poly leaves one daughter, Celeste Bell-Dos Santos, who works as a teacher and musician in Spain.

If you are a regular reader you will be aware there is a new wave of great bands referencing various indie pop groups from the early to mid 1980s. This era was best captured by a free NME cassette called C86.

Scottish bands like The Pastels and The Jesus & Mary Chain influenced a generation of floppy fringes and sugar-coated pop songs that in many cases took their influence equally from 1960’s surf or garage pop and blended it with buzz-saw guitars and angst of 1970’s punk.

The Beach Boys are often cited as a main influence but merge that with the bubblegum punk pop of The Ramones and you have a recipe for bands like The Shop Assistants, The Pastels, Talulah Gosh and the early recordings of My Bloody Valentine and Primal Scream.

The Jesus & Mary Chain were similar in their influences and if you fight your way through the wall of noise, ingeniously created in the studio by layers of feedback, you will hear two or three minute pop songs more akin to The Beach Boys than the Sex Pistols or Velvet Underground. Early Jesus & Mary Chain live performances were great. Short performances awash with uncontrollable feedback and distortion, but with the release of their second album they had dropped the uncontrollable feedback and just kept the distorted buzz-saw guitar sound.

With the advent of technology it now appears obligatory for all guitarists, even unsigned local bands, to play live with a row of pedals helping them to change from one sound to another at the off/on click of a switch. This is nothing new. In the 1980’s I would use several pedals to alter the sound of my guitar including flanger and chorus. But the right sounding buzz-saw distortion was effected by the volume of my amp. But even that can now be remedied with the award-winning THD Hot Plate, the world’s most popular power attenuator. This clever little box lets you get your amp full of distortion at any volume.

Listening to The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart I love that twee indie pop song sound with its constant buzz-saw guitar noise underbelly. Travel back 25 years and you will hear that same gritty distorted guitar sound from The Shop Assistants; and 10 years further and you have The Ramones.

Joey, Johnny and Dee Dee may have left the building but the sound they created lives on!

The Singing Loins have a special place in my tattered heart; they have inhabited a gristly ventricle since I first saw them perform with Medway’s finest folk purveyors, the mighty Hot Rats, at some village boozer when I was about 16. Hypnotised by the awesome sight of Chris Broderick beating a large stick with beer bottle tops nailed to it against the floor with such power as he sung ballads of his love for the dockyard town I grew up in, I remember thinking if this is what live music is about, count me in.

Nearly 17 years later and they’ve lost none of that charm. They’re one of Medway’s finest and worst kept secrets, who created a huge interest and new following when they reformed in 2005 with the awesome Songs To Hear Before You Die. I’ve seen them turn a rowdy boozer of beer swillers silent with their rousing odes to the underbelly of the Medway Delta. That gives you a glimmer of the sheer power they have when you see grown men shed a silent tear when they play.

Their ‘can do but don’t give a fuck‘ attitude is what separates them from the upstart whippersnappers who try, and mostly fail, to imitate their infectious blend of raw folk, spit and sawdust punk and beautiful English shanties.

While Stuff is more polished than anything I’ve heard of theirs before, it still retains the raw beauty of their dirty hobnails. Chris Broderick’s beautiful Estuary drool, dirty beats, upturned tea chests and banjo shine through and remain the true stars.

Theirs has an authenticity that is hard to find these days in a world of disposable pop shit and recycled and repackaged dirge.

Theirs are songs in the greatest folk traditions which pick at the scab of the poor, downtrodden characters anyone who’s ever spent a Saturday night in Strood will recognise. The heartfelt honesty of the beautiful All Her Life and Running Away From Home suggest a sophisticated maturity which I defy anyone without blood pulsating through their veins not to get a lump in their throat.

But don’t get too soft, Dog Shit Gang invokes the spirit of Anarchy in the UK and kicks an empty bottle of whisky across the floor, while the utterly rousing opener Slab O’ Slate and the charming howl of Nail it Back Together are the record’s stand outs for me.

If you don’t know the Singing Loins, then get listening. Thank god they put their differences aside six years ago and gave me something which has put a smile on my face for the first time in months. Cheers!

Stuff by The Singing Loins is available on Damaged Goods Records.
