Animal Collective – My Girls – single review

Animal Collective: My Girls

Animal Collective: My Girls

My Girls is the first single to be released from Aminal Collective’s recent album Merriweather Post Pavilion. The avant-garde band, whose music is more electronic than guitar based on this latest offering, have been winning rave reviews for Merriweather Post Pavilion, and My Girls is one of the stand-out tracks on it.

On My Girls, eerie synths give way to warm, sweet melodies that in Animal Collective’s typically bizarre manner, express a touchingly innocent desire for a return to familial contentedness. The repeated lyrics talk of simplistic domestic bliss, before the main hook is starkly revealed: “I don’t mean to seem like I care about material things like a social status / I just want four walls and adobe slats for my girls.”

The five and half minute song is oddly sparse for a single, but a lovely choice, particularly given the spring freshness that the whole album has about it.

Merriweather Post Pavilion is best heard in the context of the album, of course, which has been labelled in a typically gushing manner by Uncut as the ‘album of the century so far’.

The group are playing a few more shows around the place after their riotous performance at The Forum in London a month or so ago. They will be at:

24th March – The Forum, London
25th March –TJs, Leeds
26th March –The Static Gallery, Liverpool
27th March –Tripod, Dublin
28th March – Stiff Kitten, Belfast
